How to find an in-home caregiver in Brea
Before you decide how many paid hours you need, look at what the City of Brea already provides to older residents. The city's senior center has a case manager who makes home visits, a free shuttle for residents 60 and over, home-delivered meals and free loans of walkers, wheelchairs and commodes. Easterseals runs a licensed senior day program on East Birch Street. A private caregiver then covers what is left: the mornings before the shuttle, bathing, evenings, or the days after a hospital stay.
Be specific when you post. List the days and hours, the personal care involved, any memory loss, and whether the caregiver will drive your parent. Brea is a multilingual city: in ACS 2020–2024, Asian and Pacific Islander languages are spoken in 16.6% of Brea residents' homes (age five and up) and Spanish by 14.7%, so say which language your parent uses best. Profiles closest to 92821 come first, and new family postings appear above as they go live.

Evaluating caregivers in Brea
Treat every applicant's paperwork as something to verify, not something to take on trust. CNAs and certified home health aides hold CDPH certificates; search the number in CDPH's online lookup. An aide sent by a home care organization licensed in Brea (CDSS lists eight, Home Instead – Brea and Nightingale Senior Care among them) needs an active Home Care Aide registration with CDSS, which you can search online. A current IHSS provider has been fingerprinted and has completed county orientation. An independent caregiver may have none of these and still be a good fit, so the reference calls carry the weight: reach two people who employed the caregiver, and ask how they handled a missed shift, a fall and a parent who refused help. Hold the first interview at your parent's home, then schedule one paid trial shift. CaregiverConnect itself runs no screening; a family can buy its own background report once the applicant signs a consent form.
Questions families here ask at interview
- My father uses the senior center shuttle; could you have him ready for the morning pick-up between 8:15 and 10:00?
- Would you use the Tuesday-to-Friday city van with my mother for errands, or drive her yourself?
- If she comes home from Kindred Hospital Brea, how would you handle the first week?
- When a hospice or home health nurse also visits, what do you leave to the nurse and what do you handle?
- My father is most comfortable in his first language; which languages do you speak well?
- How would you keep my father engaged on days he does not go to Easterseals?
- Can you work around the HICAP or legal-aid appointments at the senior center?
- How much notice would you give before ending the job?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
The UC Berkeley Labor Center lists no Brea wage ordinance. For a caregiver on your own payroll, California's $16.90 an hour is the minimum. Useful reference points: $16.50, the May 2025 BLS aide median for the combined two-county metro; $18.90, what IHSS pays providers for Orange County clients; $17.00 to $21.00, NOCE's average range for personal care aides; and $40.00 an hour, CareScout's 2025 California median for agency homemaker and home health aide services, which works out from its $91,520 annual figure at 44 hours a week. If a caregiver you employ works more than nine hours in a shift, or above 45 in a week, those extra hours are paid at 1.5 times the base rate (Domestic Worker Bill of Rights). Parents with Medi-Cal can apply for IHSS on (714) 825-3000; CDSS requires a Medi-Cal eligibility determination.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
