How to find an in-home caregiver in Tustin

A Tustin posting is typically about one person: a parent who still lives alone, a parent who has moved in, or a spouse after surgery. Only 13.1% of Tustin residents are 65 or older, yet more than a quarter of households (26.2%) include someone in that age group, so care is often organized by working adults with limited daytime hours. Profiles of caregivers around Tustin fill the list above as they register. The more specific the posting, the better the replies: days and hours, whether there are stairs, pets or a second person to help, and whose car gets used for errands.

Among Tustin residents five and older, 31.3% speak Spanish in the household and 16.5% an Asian or Pacific Islander language, with Chinese, Korean, Indian, Filipino and Vietnamese families each a few percent of the city. When a parent slips back into a first language as fatigue or confusion sets in, name that language in the request.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Tustin

Expect some applicants to bring state CNA certification, an agency aide's registry listing, IHSS provider experience (Orange County providers are fingerprinted through the Public Authority), or a caregiver certificate from Santa Ana College or Orange Coast College. Interview at your relative's home with them in the room; ask what the caregiver did with a difficult past client, and phone two or more references. A paid trial shift shows more than any interview. CaregiverConnect leaves background screening to families: if you want a report, the caregiver signs an authorization and you pay a screening firm.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • What did your first week look like with a client just home from Foothill Regional or St. Joseph Hospital?
  • Can you communicate with my mother in Spanish during bathing and meals?
  • Would you go with my father on the Tustin Area Senior Center bus, or drive him yourself?
  • Have you cared for someone with Parkinson's, and how did you handle a freezing episode or a fall?
  • Have you ever been paid through IHSS in this county?
  • Show me how you would log my mother's pills, and tell me what happens when one gets skipped.
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Tustin: hourly rates and schedules

Arrangements to consider: three to five weekday mornings to cover the shower, the first meal and the morning pills; a midday block around the senior center lunch; or full days for someone who should not be left alone. After a hospital discharge, budget for longer shifts and possibly nights for two or three weeks, then step down. Saturday or Sunday relief for a spouse caring full time is worth budgeting from the start.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

No Tustin minimum wage ordinance exists, so the state $16.90 applies. Set beside that the $18.90 IHSS provider wage in Orange County, the $16.50 aide median the BLS reports for the metro, and $40 an hour, CareScout's 2025 median for California agencies. Hiring someone yourself makes you the employer; Under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, overtime starts after the ninth hour of a shift or the 45th of a week, and payroll taxes can be owed on annual wages above federal limits.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

How do I find a caregiver in Tustin without an agency?

Create a free posting listing your ZIP code and the help needed. Caregivers whose travel range includes Tustin apply; you read profiles, interview, and agree the rate and hours with the person you choose.

What is a fair hourly rate for a Tustin caregiver?

Not less than $16.90, the state minimum. Above that, compare with $18.90 for IHSS work in the county and with $40, CareScout's agency median; the tasks, hours and languages you need decide where you land.

Is there an Alzheimer's support group in Tustin?

Yes. The Tustin Area Senior Center hosts a monthly group for caregivers of people with Alzheimer's on the second Tuesday afternoon; call (714) 573-3340 to confirm.

Can my relative get to appointments if the caregiver does not drive?

Tustin residents 60 and over can pre-register for the senior center bus, which runs to medical visits in town and to several hospitals and clinics outside it, including St. Joseph and UC Irvine Medical Center.

Will CaregiverConnect check a caregiver's background for me?

No. As the employer you confirm identity and references and decide on a background check. A Verified badge reflects a reviewed upload and nothing beyond that.
