How to find an in-home caregiver in Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach has about 37,900 residents aged 65 or older, 19.4% of the city (ACS 2020–2024), and 55.4% of the city's homes are owner-occupied, so most requests here are for help that lets someone stay put: getting up and dressed, a safe shower, meals, medication reminders, rides and company. Write your posting around a normal day for your parent, give your ZIP code (92646 to 92649) and the hours, and local caregivers get an alert and can respond; the profile cards on this page grow as more people in the area register. A good share of applicants will live in nearby cities rather than in Huntington Beach itself, so tell them where to park and whether the shift starts before morning traffic. Roughly a quarter of residents use another language at home, mostly Spanish or Vietnamese; if your parent is more at ease in either, put it in the title of your posting.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Huntington Beach

Ask about three credentials and verify each. Getting onto the state's aide registry requires Live Scan fingerprints; it is compulsory for agency employees and optional for independents. IHSS providers complete a Live Scan when they enroll with the county Public Authority in Santa Ana. Certified nursing assistants hold a state certificate, and Golden West College on Goldenwest Street trains them locally. After that, speak to at least two former employers, interview in your parent's home so you can see how the caregiver helps them stand and walk, and start with a few paid trial visits. CaregiverConnect performs no screening; the Verified badge marks a background-check document the caregiver obtained and uploaded.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Dad walks with a walker; can you walk us through moving him safely from his recliner to the toilet?
  • If he went to the geriatric emergency room at Huntington Beach Hospital on Beach Boulevard, what would you bring and who would you call?
  • Did you train anywhere, for example the Golden West College CNA course, and are you on the aide registry or enrolled with IHSS?
  • From where would you commute, and could you be here by 8 am?
  • Can you speak Spanish or Vietnamese with my mother if she prefers it?
  • What would you do if Mom grew agitated in the late afternoon, as she does with her dementia?
  • Is your rate different for weekends, nights or using your car for errands?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Huntington Beach: hourly rates and schedules

Typical Huntington Beach postings are three to six hours on weekday mornings for personal care and lunch, two or three afternoons a week of companionship and errands, or a stretch of longer days after a hospital stay. Families caring for someone with dementia tend to add evenings and weekend relief for the spouse. If your parent attends lunch at the Senior Center in Central Park three days a week, build the caregiver's hours around it.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Huntington Beach has no city minimum wage, so the state's $16.90 is the floor. Employed aides across the two-county metro earn a $16.50 median, Orange County IHSS providers earn $18.90, and CareScout's 2025 survey puts the California agency median for non-medical care at $40 an hour and adult day health care at $94 a day. A caregiver you hire directly will usually quote somewhere between the IHSS and agency figures, higher for dementia care or heavy transfers. As the employer you owe overtime to a personal attendant after nine hours in a day or 45 in a week, and household payroll taxes once wages pass federal thresholds.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Huntington Beach: frequently asked questions

How do I hire a caregiver in Huntington Beach?

Post your needs free, with the ZIP code, schedule and any language preference. Caregivers who cover the city apply, you compare their profiles and messages, interview your shortlist then settle terms one to one with whoever you pick.

What will a private caregiver charge in Huntington Beach?

Each caregiver names a price. Orange County IHSS pays $18.90 and CareScout reports $40 as the 2025 statewide agency median; independent quotes in Huntington Beach generally fall inside that range.

What help does the city offer older residents?

The city provides care management for residents 62 and older, home-delivered meals, free Seniors on the Go rides and the Senior Center in Central Park on Goldenwest Street. These can cover some hours so a paid caregiver is needed for fewer.

Which hospital is closest for an emergency?

Huntington Beach Hospital at 17772 Beach Boulevard is open and has a geriatric emergency room; its main number is 714-843-5000. Make sure your caregiver knows the address and your parent’s medication list.

Does CaregiverConnect screen caregivers for me?

No. You are responsible for checking references, identity and any background report; the Verified badge reflects a check the caregiver arranged and uploaded, not one we performed.
