Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in La Palma

A few checks go a long way. A CNA's certificate number can be checked with CDPH. An aide from one of La Palma's licensed home care organizations must be a registered home care aide with CDSS; independent caregivers may register but do not have to. Orange County IHSS registry providers have attended an orientation, passed a reference check and phone interview, and cleared a Department of Justice background check. Beyond that, phone two prior employers, include your parent when you interview, and stay home during a paid first shift. CaregiverConnect does not screen, vet or background-check caregivers. Should you want a criminal record check, it is your decision to order, with the caregiver's written permission.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • My mother is coming home from La Palma Intercommunity Hospital after a hip replacement. What have you done for clients recovering from joint surgery?
  • Could you speak Tagalog (or Korean) with my father during the day?
  • My mother takes a free NOCE class at the community center. Could you drive her there and stay until it ends?
  • My brother and I check in each evening. How would you record meals and medications for us?
  • My father lives alone. What would you look for on each visit to tell us he is managing?
  • Are you on the Orange County IHSS Public Authority registry, or registered as a home care aide?

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

A caregiver on your own La Palma payroll must earn at least California's $16.90; no city wage law for La Palma shows up in UC Berkeley's Labor Center inventory. Useful benchmarks above it: aides earned a $16.50 median across the two-county Los Angeles and Orange metro in May 2025 (BLS); Orange County pays IHSS providers $18.90 from January 1, 2026; and in CareScout's 2025 tables a California agency homemaker averaging 44 hours a week costs $91,520 a year, or $40.00 per hour. State domestic worker rules make a La Palma household that employs a personal attendant pay 1.5 times the wage from hour ten of a shift and for weekly hours beyond 45. IHSS, open to people living at home who have a Medi-Cal eligibility determination, is worth checking before you commit to private pay; the Orange County IHSS guide lists the steps.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
