How to find an in-home caregiver in Garden Grove

More than a third of Garden Grove households (36.4%) include someone 65 or older, and in many of them the older person speaks Vietnamese or Spanish more easily than English. The census numbers make the point: 34.0% of residents are Vietnamese, Asian and Pacific Island languages are the home language for 37.7% of residents past their fifth birthday, and 23.6% of residents use one of them while having limited English (ACS 2020–2024). Little Saigon, which ABC7 describes as spread across Garden Grove, Westminster, Santa Ana and Fountain Valley, runs through the city. So the first decision is language: name it in your posting and use the language filter on the caregiver cards. The cards above show caregivers whose travel radius covers you, nearest first, and they change as people join. Post with your ZIP (92840, 92841 or 92843 to 92845) and the hours, and expect applicants from Westminster and Santa Ana as well as Garden Grove.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Garden Grove

Ask each applicant which of the three verifiable credentials they hold. IHSS providers have cleared the Public Authority's DOJ fingerprint check; CNAs carry a CDPH certificate; Home Care Aides on the CDSS registry have also been fingerprinted. Check the one claimed, call two references (in Vietnamese or Spanish if that is the language they worked in), interview with your parent present so you can see how they talk to each other, then book one paid trial shift. The site itself performs no background screening; its Verified badge reflects reviewed uploads only.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • Bà/ông nói tiếng Việt với người được chăm sóc được không? Can you also read medication labels and doctor notes to my mother in Vietnamese?
  • Which patients have you looked after following a discharge from Garden Grove Hospital or Orange Coast Medical Center?
  • Are you an Orange County IHSS provider, and could some of your hours be IHSS hours?
  • Do you cook Vietnamese or Mexican food the way my father is used to?
  • Can you drive him to the H. Louis Lake Senior Center lunch or to clinics in Westminster?
  • How do you help someone get in and out of the shower safely?
  • What is your hourly rate, and how many hours a week can you commit to?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Garden Grove: hourly rates and schedules

Where an older parent lives in the family home, the usual pattern to post is shift cover: four to six hours on weekdays while adult children work, occasionally a split morning and evening visit for bathing and medication, and Saturday respite. If your relative already has IHSS hours, post the full week and mark which hours are IHSS and which are private.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Garden Grove has no local minimum wage, so $16.90 is the floor; Orange County IHSS providers earn $18.90 and EDD's county aide median is $17.11. Expect private caregivers to ask between the IHSS wage and the $40 California agency median, more for personal care, overnight stays and driving. 15.8% of Garden Grove residents over 65 live below the poverty line, so check IHSS eligibility through SSA before you assume you must pay privately. Overtime for personal attendants starts after nine hours a day or 45 a week.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Garden Grove: frequently asked questions

Will I find a caregiver who speaks Vietnamese in Garden Grove?

Name Vietnamese as a requirement in your posting and use the language filter. With a third of the city Vietnamese, it is a realistic requirement.

What should I budget for a caregiver in Garden Grove?

Plan on more than the $18.90 IHSS wage and less than the $40 California agency median for most private arrangements; long shifts trigger overtime after nine hours.

Our grandmother is on Medi-Cal. Could IHSS pay for her help?

Possibly, through IHSS. Call the county at (714) 825-3000 to apply; if hours are approved, the provider can be someone she picks, such as a grandchild or a caregiver from this site.

Where can my father spend part of the day while the caregiver is off?

The H. Louis Lake Senior Center on Stanford Avenue is open weekdays for people 55 and over, and the county lists a lunch café and transportation there.

Is a caregiver from Westminster or Santa Ana a good fit?

Often yes; check the distance on each card and ask how long the drive takes at your start time.

Are caregivers on CaregiverConnect screened?

Not by the site. You verify identity, references and any credential before hiring.
