How to find an in-home caregiver in Palm Springs

You post the help you need under your ZIP code (92262 or 92264), with days, hours and tasks, and caregivers whose travel radius covers Palm Springs apply to you directly. In a city where 6,255 households, a quarter of the total, are a single person aged 65 or older (ACS 2020–2024), the most common need is a dependable person who comes on set days, keeps the fridge stocked, drives to appointments and tells the family what they see. Be specific about that last part: a short text after each visit, a weekly call, or a shared notebook in the kitchen.

Applicants are likely to come from across the western valley, from Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs as well as Palm Springs itself, so give them the cross-streets and say whether parking is easy in your complex. English is the only home language for 72.6% of residents and Spanish for 20.0%; mention a language preference if your relative has one. If you live elsewhere and spend only part of the year here, as owners of the 27.1% of homes held for seasonal use do, start the search a few weeks before you need someone and plan one in-person meeting.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Palm Springs

Ask each applicant what they hold and check it: a Riverside County IHSS provider enrollment, a Home Care Aide Registry listing (required for agency aides, optional for independents) or a CNA certificate from the California Department of Public Health. Experience at one of the city's 12 licensed assisted-living and board-and-care homes, such as Windsor Court, Hallmark or Stonewall Gardens, can be confirmed with a phone call to the facility. Interview at the home with your relative taking part, speak to two previous families, commission a background check from a consumer reporting agency with the caregiver's signed consent, and start with paid trial shifts. CaregiverConnect does not vet caregivers or run background checks; a Verified badge only shows that a document was uploaded.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • How would you keep me informed if I am not in Palm Springs, and how often?
  • Have you helped someone home after a stay at Desert Regional Medical Center, and what did the first week involve?
  • Can you drive my father to appointments in your own car, and what do you charge per mile?
  • What would you do if you arrived on a 115-degree afternoon and the air conditioning had failed?
  • Are you on the Home Care Aide Registry, enrolled with Riverside County IHSS, or a certified nursing assistant?
  • Which days could you commit to through the summer as well as the winter?
  • Have you cared for someone with memory loss who lives alone, and how did you keep them safe between visits?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Palm Springs: hourly rates and schedules

Start small and adjust. A few set visits a week for shopping, meals, medication reminders and company is an easy first posting, and it can grow into daily visits or overnights as needs change. After a hospital stay, plan for a period of longer days before stepping back down. In summer, put visits in the morning and early evening and add a daily phone check during heat warnings. If your relative goes to Mizell Center activities or receives Meals on Wheels, schedule around them.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Palm Springs follows the state minimum wage of $16.90, with no city ordinance above it. Private caregivers generally quote somewhere between Riverside County's $19.90 IHSS wage and the $40 California agency median, and more for overnights, dementia care or driving in their own car. Only one licensed home care organization is based in the city (May 2025 state file), so an agency quote will often come from Palm Desert or Rancho Mirage. Overtime for a personal attendant starts after nine hours in a day or 45 in a week. If your relative is on Medi-Cal, IHSS can pay a caregiver you choose for the hours the county approves.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Questions

Hiring a caregiver in Palm Springs: frequently asked questions

Can I arrange care for a parent in Palm Springs while I live elsewhere?

Yes. Post from anywhere, shortlist and interview by video, and meet the caregiver at your parent's home before the first shift. Agree how and when they will report to you.

How much should I budget for a private caregiver in Palm Springs?

Expect an hourly rate above the $19.90 county IHSS wage and below the $40 agency median, plus mileage if the caregiver uses their own car. Overnights and dementia care cost more.

Does Palm Springs have a meal delivery service for older residents?

Mizell Center on South Sunrise Way runs Meals on Wheels for the whole valley; call (760) 323-5689. A caregiver can then focus on other tasks.

What happens to care in the summer heat?

County public health counts older adults among those most at risk during heat warnings, and in July 2026 forecasts for the valley reached 118 degrees. Move visits to cooler hours, add a daily check-in during warnings and make sure the caregiver knows where the nearest cool center is.

Do you check the caregivers who apply?

No. CaregiverConnect is a marketplace; the screening steps above are yours to take, with the caregiver's written consent for any report.
