How to find an in-home caregiver in Indio
Most Indio families who look for a caregiver are looking for help in the family home. The May 2025 state licensing file lists only nine licensed elder-care residences in a city of 92,360, each with six beds, and a single licensed home care agency based in Indio. Yet in 39.4% of Indio households at least one member has turned 65, according to the 2020–2024 American Community Survey. The usual arrangement here combines relatives, In-Home Supportive Services hours if the older person has Medi-Cal, and a paid caregiver for the gaps: weekday mornings while everyone works, or the nights a parent with dementia can no longer be left alone.
Spanish is the first language in many homes: just over half of residents aged five-plus (52.0%) speak it at home, and for 17.2% English is the weaker language. State the language in your posting, and whether your parent needs the caregiver to explain doctors' instructions in Spanish. Applicants may live in Indio itself or elsewhere in the valley along Highway 111, so ask about the drive. Profiles of caregivers near you appear above, nearest first, as they join; post even if the list is short, because new caregivers see postings within their travel radius.

Evaluating caregivers in Indio
For an IHSS provider, Riverside County's enrollment includes an orientation, signed copies of SOC 426 and SOC 846, and state fingerprinting, so ask whether the caregiver has completed it. For anyone else, search the caregiver's name on the state Home Care Aide Registry, where independents may choose to list, and confirm any CNA or Home Health Aide certificate with CDPH. Hold the interview in the house, in whichever language your relative speaks, with your relative taking part; telephone two references; with written consent, order a background report from a screening company; and pay for a few trial days before committing. The platform itself checks no one: the Verified mark only records that a caregiver's own proof of a check was looked at.
Questions families here ask at interview
- Mi mamá habla solo español; can you speak with her in Spanish and send me updates in English?
- Are you already enrolled as an IHSS provider in Riverside County, and how many hours do you work for other clients?
- Can you take my father to JFK Memorial Hospital on Monroe Street and stay with him during the visit?
- What will you do on a July afternoon when it is over 105 degrees and he wants to go out?
- My father gets up and walks around at night because of his dementia; what would you do?
- Do you have a car, and how far away do you live?
- Does your hourly rate change for nights or weekends, and by how much?
What in-home care costs in Indio: hourly rates and schedules
In Indio the common patterns are early-morning starts for washing, dressing and breakfast before relatives leave for work; midday company and lunch; evening or overnight supervision for dementia; and weekend relief for the family member who provides most of the care. Privately paid hours can sit alongside IHSS hours rather than replacing them.
| Reference point | Hourly | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Employed aides, Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario metro (Riverside County) | $16.50 median | BLS OEWS, May 2025 |
| IHSS provider wage, Riverside County | $19.90 | CDSS; effective May 1, 2026 |
| California minimum wage | $16.90 | effective January 1, 2026 |
| Agency non-medical home care, California median (CareScout 2025) | $40.00 | CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025 |
Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.
If your relative qualifies for IHSS, Riverside County pays its $19.90 hourly rate to the provider for the authorized hours and you pay nothing for those hours. For hours beyond that, weigh the $16.50 median that employed aides in the metro earn, the $16.90 state minimum (Indio has no local ordinance), and the $40 California agency median. Median household income in Indio is $77,167, below the county's $93,074. When you pay the caregiver yourself you become their employer, and a personal attendant's ninth-plus hour in a day, or 45th-plus in a week, is paid at the overtime rate; the IHSS pay guide explains county rates.
No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.

Hiring a caregiver in Indio: frequently asked questions
Can I ask specifically for Spanish?
Say so in your posting and in the first message. Spanish is spoken at home by just over half of Indio residents, and caregivers list the languages they speak on their profiles, so you can ask before any interview.
Can a family member be paid to look after my mother?
Yes, if she has Medi-Cal and Riverside County authorizes IHSS hours. The relative enrolls as her provider and the county pays $19.90 an hour; a private caregiver can cover hours IHSS does not.
Are there assisted-living options in Indio?
Few. Indio has nine licensed elder-care homes, all six-bed houses, so many families look at care at home first, or at the larger communities in Palm Desert and La Quinta.
What should a caregiver do in the summer heat?
Agree a heat plan before June. The 1991–2020 normal high at the Thermal station is 106.9°F in July and is over 100°F in each month from June through September, so outings and errands belong in the early morning.
What will a private caregiver charge an Indio family?
Each caregiver sets a rate. Most families compare it with the $19.90 IHSS figure and the $40 California agency median; nights, dementia care and driving cost more.
Is posting a care need free?
Yes. Indio families can post and review applicants without paying; messaging and hire confirmation come with the $24.99-a-month Family Premium plan, and CaregiverConnect takes no share of wages.
