How to find an in-home caregiver in Banning

Caring for an aging relative is a common situation in Banning: ACS 2020–2024 counts 5,773 households with someone 65 or older, out of 11,624, and 1,763 residents past 85. Banning workers average a 32.6-minute trip to work, so if you have a commute of your own, the first thing to say in a post is when the caregiver needs to arrive and when you will be home. Then list the tasks, any driving, and the rate.

Language matters for some families. Close to a third of residents aged five and up (30.7%) use Spanish at home, and 10.5% have limited English, so name your parent's preferred language. If your parent is coming home from San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital, ask its social services department to coordinate home health before discharge, then post for the hours of daily help that home health does not cover.

Choosing well

Evaluating caregivers in Banning

Ask what each applicant holds, then check it. CNAs are certified by CDPH, and their certificates can be looked up. Enrolled IHSS providers have been fingerprinted through the state DOJ, and Banning itself has two Live Scan sites for anyone starting that process. Staff sent by one of Banning's two licensed home care organizations will be registered home care aides; independents usually are not, since registration is voluntary for them. Phone two former employers of the applicant, include your parent in the interview, and try a paid half-day before committing. CaregiverConnect does not run background checks or confirm identities; if you want a check, arrange it with the caregiver's written consent.

Questions families here ask at interview

  • How far is your drive to our street, and could you start before my workday begins?
  • What did you do for a client in the first days home from San Gorgonio Memorial, Sundance Creek or Sunrise Post Acute?
  • Would you bring my father to the weekday lunch at the Banning Senior Center and stay with him?
  • Are you willing to book and ride Banning Connect Dial-A-Ride with him to appointments?
  • Do you speak Spanish, and can you explain his medicines to me afterward in English?
  • Tell me about a dementia client of yours who was up and restless at 3 a.m.: what worked?
  • Should Riverside County approve IHSS hours for him, are you willing to be his enrolled provider?
Schedules and cost

What in-home care costs in Banning: hourly rates and schedules

Commuter days. Weekday blocks that start early and run until a working son or daughter gets home suit families with a long drive to work. Around the senior center. Some families book mornings for bathing and dressing, then rely on the 11:30 a.m. weekday lunch at the Banning Senior Center for the middle of the day. After a hospital stay. Expect more hours, sometimes overnight, for the first weeks home, then a step down.

Who is the employer. When you hire a caregiver directly, you are a household employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

With no Banning ordinance in UC Berkeley's inventory, the hourly minimum for anyone you employ is California's $16.90, and a personal attendant on your payroll is owed an overtime premium of half the hourly rate once the workday runs past nine hours, and likewise past 45 weekly hours, under state domestic worker rules. For comparison, the county's IHSS wage is $19.90 and CareScout's California agency median is $40. With a median household income of $61,764 in ACS 2020–2024 and 14.7% of older residents below the poverty line, IHSS is worth checking first. Medi-Cal enrollees can apply by phone at (888) 960-4477, and it is sensible to do so before fixing a private budget.

No agency tracks private rates. A caregiver you hire directly will usually expect more than the employed-aide median and less than an agency rate; every caregiver on this site lists an hourly rate on their profile, and the hiring guide covers taxes and overtime.
