Finding in-home caregiver jobs in Mecca

There is no Mecca city hall to call. Mecca is a census-designated place, so the bus, the library, the clinic and the recreation center a caregiver here uses are run by SunLine, Riverside County, a nonprofit health center and the Desert Recreation District. The Census Bureau's ACS 2020–2024 counts 7,184 residents (margin of error 996) with a median age of 32.3. Of them, 894 are 65 or older (12.4%) and 129 are past 85. Older residents are spread through family homes: 662 of Mecca's 2,186 households include someone 65 or over, and 303 are an older person living alone.

Language decides most hires. ACS finds Spanish spoken at home by 87.2% of Mecca residents aged five and up, and 45.1% speak English less than very well. Nearly half (48.4%) were born outside the country. A Mecca family will often want a caregiver who can explain a prescription in Spanish and then talk to the pharmacist in English. Put both languages near the top of your profile, say honestly how strong each one is, and list whether you have your own car or ride SunLine.

The requests most likely here: a few hours each morning with a grandparent while the working adults are away, rides to the 66th Avenue clinic or to specialists in Indio, help with bathing and meals after a hospital stay, and shared IHSS hours where a son or daughter is the main provider. Companionship and housekeeping suit a first job; families tend to want proven experience before trusting someone with transfers, wound care or dementia.

Pay

Caregiver pay in Mecca: how much caregivers make

Public figures first, then what they mean for private work. Statistics describe employed aides across the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario, CA metro (Riverside and San Bernardino counties); private rates on CaregiverConnect are agreed between each caregiver and family and are not tracked by any agency.

MeasureHourlySource and coverage
Home health and personal care aides, Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario, CA metro (Riverside and San Bernardino counties)$16.50 median ($17.03 mean)BLS OEWS, May 2025; 102,760 jobs; concentration 2.16× national

California minimum wage$16.90effective January 1, 2026

Who is the employer. A family that hires you directly is your employer under California's Domestic Worker Bill of Rights. The state minimum wage ($16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026; some cities set more, for example $17.75 in the City of San Diego) is the legal floor, and a personal attendant earns overtime at 1.5× after 9 hours in a day or 45 in a week. The main exceptions are IHSS recipients and an employer's own parent, spouse or child. Source: California DIR, Domestic Worker Bill of Rights FAQ.

Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario MSA (Riverside and San Bernardino counties) projection: 94,950 aide jobs in 2023 to 126,020 in 2033 (+32.7%), about 191,990 openings over the decade including replacements (California EDD, 2023–2033 projections published April 2026). Openings are not the same as net new jobs.

About 6.0% of Mecca's labor force was unemployed, on average, between August 2025 and August 2026, according to EDD estimates. That is above both the Riverside County average (5.5%) and the statewide 5.3%. EDD builds figures for small unincorporated places like Mecca from county totals, so read this one as approximate: the monthly values moved between 5.1% and 6.8% in a labor force of roughly 3,775. That swing matters in a place where ACS puts 19.9% of employed residents in agriculture, against 1.4% county-wide. Care work does not stop between harvests, and Riverside County IHSS pays $19.90 for every authorized hour.

Private budgets are modest. ACS gives Mecca a median household income of $48,312, roughly half the county's $93,074, and 17.8% of residents live below the poverty line. Expect private offers close to the floor. The UC Berkeley Labor Center's July 2026 table lists no local minimum wage anywhere in Riverside County, so the state's $16.90 applies in Mecca. If a family asks for long days, settle overtime before you start, because state rules give personal attendants overtime past a nine-hour day or a 45-hour week.

How to enroll as a provider in Riverside County, with the office phone lines and orientation steps, is in the IHSS Riverside County guide. IHSS wages for every county we cover, with effective dates, are in the IHSS pay by county guide.

How the public numbers relate to private rates, and what affects them, is covered in the caregiver pay guide.

Rules

Caregiver requirements in California, applied to Mecca

The state rules do not change in Mecca. Families can employ you directly for non-medical care with no license required, and Home Care Aide Registry enrollment is something only agency employment triggers. The CDSS licensing files from May 2025 show no home care agency and no elder care home with a 92254 address, so nearly all paid care here is direct or through IHSS. To become an IHSS provider, call the county's IHSS HOME line on (888) 960-4477 and expect a Live Scan, an online orientation and an in-person session. The Attorney General's Live Scan list shows no fingerprint site in Mecca; the closest listings are in Coachella and Indio. Facility work and nursing tasks require a CDPH certificate. Caregivers of elders are mandated reporters. The requirements guide has the full rules.

Mecca in numbers

ACS 2020–2024 counts 98.4% of Mecca residents as Hispanic or Latino. Owners occupy 53.8% of homes and the median gross rent is $916. One household in seven (15.3%) has no vehicle, more than three times the county share of 4.3%, which is why a caregiver who drives is valued and why the 66th Avenue bus stop matters. Of Mecca residents 65 and older, 45.4% report a disability (35.4% county-wide), and 11.1% of the civilian population lacks health insurance. Those who work average a 27.7-minute commute; education, health care and social assistance employ 16.8% of them (21.2% county-wide).

CDPH's facility file lists only two licensed sites in Mecca, both Innercare clinics on 66th Avenue: no hospital and no nursing home. By OSRM road routing from the Census Bureau's center point for Mecca, John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital on Monroe Street in Indio is about 15 miles, roughly 27 minutes, and Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage about 30 miles. County programs are on the Riverside County page and the desert cities on the Coachella Valley page; nearby, see Coachella and Indio.

Questions

Caregiver jobs in Mecca: frequently asked questions

Where can I get IHSS fingerprints done if I live in Mecca?

Not in Mecca itself: the Attorney General's Riverside County list has no Live Scan operator with a Mecca address. The nearest listed sites are in Coachella and Indio, both reachable on SunLine Route 8. Take the county's Live Scan form with you.

Does the bus run early enough for a morning shift in Indio?

Route 8 leaves 66th Avenue at Date Palm at 5:55 a.m. every day and reaches Monroe Street in Indio about an hour later. Buses run hourly, so a 7 a.m. start in Coachella is workable; check the September 2026 timetable before you commit.

How much does IHSS pay a provider living in Mecca?

Riverside County's IHSS wage, $19.90 an hour from May 1, 2026, applies to clients in Mecca. What counts is the client's county of residence, so a client in Imperial County would be paid at Imperial's rate.

Can I train as a home health aide near Mecca?

Yes, if you already have a CNA certificate. College of the Desert runs a short home health aide class in its winter and summer intersessions, and the winter 2027 application is open from October 19 to 30, 2026. The college's nurse assistant course comes first if you are not yet certified.

Do I need to speak Spanish to work in Mecca?

It is not required, but Spanish is the home language in most Mecca households. ACS finds that close to half of Mecca residents speak English less than very well, and 87.2% of residents aged five and up use Spanish at home.

How do families in Mecca find me?

They post on the Mecca family page, and the posting appears here for caregivers whose radius covers 92254. Building a profile and applying are free, and none of your pay goes to CaregiverConnect.
